Those people inflicted with fibromyalgia can truly suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous pain. But the agony and suffering of people with fibromyalgia can be alleviated with the help of chiropractic care.
Fibromyalgia is characterized by that nagging, sometimes severe pain that can be widespread throughout the musculoskeletal frame of the body. It is often accompanied by fatigue, sleep problems, and even memory and mood issues. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia intensifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain processes our pain signals.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), fibromyalgia affects about 4 million US adults—about 2% of the adult population. The cause of fibromyalgia is not really known, but it can be triggered by stressful events—either physical (such as an injury) or emotional (such as PTSD). It may even be brought on by a viral infection.
Fibromyalgia is an equal opportunity disorder that affects people of all ages—even children—but usually is diagnosed in people of middle age. However, women are twice as likely to have fibromyalgia than men. Also if you have Lupus or Rheumatoid Arthritis, you are more likely to develop fibromyalgia. Other factors that come into play are family history and obesity.
In a study published in the National Library of Medicine National Center for Biotechnology Information (PubMed.gov), a group of patients ranging in age from 25 to 70 underwent chiropractic treatment. After four (4) weeks of chiropractic management, patients reported improved cervical and lumbar ranges of motion and improved pain levels.
Also, a study was published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine which dealt with women suffering from fibromyalgia and their ability to train and exercise. In the study they separated the patients into two groups. One group did Resistance Training only, the other group did Resistance Training along with receiving chiropractic treatment. Results show the women who only did the Resistance Training dropped out at 5 to 1 over those who were training and receiving chiropractic care. Those women in both groups who remained saw an increase in muscular strength, however, only those women in the group that received chiropractic care significantly improved in the pre- to post functional domains of flexibility, balance and coordination, and endurance.
To have pain or not to have pain? That is the question. Chiropractic care for fibromyalgia has proven to dramatically make a positive difference in patients\’ lives. And maybe that is the answer for you.
