One of my five keys to health is probably the biggest key—DIET; more specifically, plant-based diet! Whatever we do on a consistent basis is what we will become.

So we eat 3-4 times per day everyday, there’s a lot of consistency in that. Are we consistently eating the SAD (Standard American diet) disease-promoting diet, or are we pumping massive quantities of nutrition in us?
I believe that the most important diet for us humans—and research bares this out—is a plant-based one.
I have been following Dr. Joel Fuhrman the last several years. He espouses the Nutritarian or Micronutrient-rich diet. It is a plant-based diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, beans and berries.
He has reversed diseases in people such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, and all the while made weight loss a glorious side effect.
Here are some quick bullet points from his book “Eat to Live”:
- That hunger feeling we feel (the rumbling stomach) is in fact your body detoxing itself and not actual hunger. Eating stops the detox process. So when we thought we were only hungry, in fact, we actually stopped a deep internal cleaning the body does daily.
- 100 calories of kale vs. 100 calories of steak: Kale has double the protein of steak.
- Leafy greens are the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet.
- Eat whole foods instead of just the oil of the whole foods. When we consume oils—even oils like olive oil—we are taking out the plant nutrient protection and fibers, and all we are left with is fat.
- Lung cancer rates are considerably lower (about 1/5) in countries that have a high vegetable consumption, even though they may smoke. Raw fruits and vegetables offer powerful protection; leafy greens are the most protective.
- Mushrooms, onions and garlic inhibit the growth of arteries. When we consume plant-based diet that involves these plants, the arteries that grow out to feed the fat cells shrink. If there is no blood supply to feed the fat, the fat goes away. That’s a good thing. : )
