by Luz Senan, D.C. If you have neck and lower back pain due to certain conditions, you might go through a procedure called Spinal Decompression Therapy at the chiropractic office. Spinal decompression therapy is safe, non-surgical and serves to treat disc problems in the neck and in the lower back, and relieve pain associated with bulging, degenerating, or herniated discs. Using an FDA-cleared equipment, spinal decompression therapy applies distraction forces to the spine using a computer in a graduated manner. The procedure involves cycles of distraction and partial relaxation.

This procedure is not safe for you if you are or have the following conditions: • Pregnant • With fractured vertebrae • Spinal fusion • An artificial disc or other implants in your spine • Failed back surgery • Conditions that may compromise the integrity of the spine like osteoporosis or osteopenia, spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, spinal tumors, ankylosing spondylitisWhat should I expect?
If for the lower back, you will lie (fully clothed) on a motorized table. The lower part of the table is movable and the upper part is fixed. You will be harnessed around the hips; the harness is attached to the lower table, which slides back and forth, allowing the traction and relaxation movement. If for the neck, a neck contraption will be attached to the table and you will rest your neck on it. This contraption will gently pull the neck up. There should be no pain nor discomfort during or after each session, except for a nice stretched feeling in the spine. A typical treatment period is 15-20 minutes per session over 4-6 weeks.
